What is a Puppy Social?

Puppy Socials are hour-long play sessions where puppies get to play with other puppies offleash in a supervised setting.

Why should my puppy attend a Puppy or Adolescent Social?

Puppies who get to play with lots of different pups during their early months learn how to communicate better with other dogs, learn confidence around other dogs, and are much more well-adjusted as adults.

Just playing with the other dog in your house or the neighbor's dog isn't adequate - your pup needs to learn to be comfortable around strange dogs too!  Similar to people, dogs have different communication styles, and the more "dog" your puppy understands the less likely there is to be a misunderstanding between your pup and another.  Supervision is important when puppies play too! This is so the shy pups don't get bullied and become fearful, and the bullies learn how to work and play well with others.

Also, at this age your puppy is learning how to use his or her jaws.  We want them to learn how to inhibit their bites so that their teeth don't damage other dogs or people when they're adults.  Any dog could bite if scared or hurt enough - even the most even-tempered!  Simply telling them "NO" when they bite won't teach them anything about jaw pressure.  Playing with other puppies and giving them feedback when they bite YOU does.  See our handout on Bite Inhibition for more information.

What should I bring to the Social or Playgroup?

Bring your dog or puppy, some treats, and the most recent copy of your dog's vaccinations records.  For the safety of all our dog clients, no dogs will be allowed in without proof of vaccination.  You can also view our Puppy Social handout for more information on what to bring, what to expect, and puppy social rules.
